Lyra and I went for our inaugural ride yesterday. I just got a new commuter bike so that I can put the iBert child seat on it rather than the fancy carbon fiber frame of my road bike. It's a forward facing one that does not have a trailer or other attachment so it's good for chatting with Lyra while we're tearing up the streets rather than constantly having to turn around to check on her. I think we'll actually get a trailer one day, but not just yet.
BUT FIRST...here's a gratuitous picture of Lyra doing her best impression of a fashionista. The shades are a birthday gift courtesy of Darin and Jonathan and Masha's first comment was a wistful "I wish they were my size".
Back to cycling! You can see here how it straddles the cross bar, and it keeps out of the way of my knees too. The seat is actually attached to the handlebar stem so it rotates with the front wheel. We didn't actually go too far - just a couple of blocks - as we wanted to see how Lyra coped with the new thrill of two-wheeling it. She wasn't too sure, but eventually started pointing to things and loosening up a bit. Big plans for the future now!
After a quick spin the inner tube on the new back exploded with a loud 'BANG!' so we ended our ride there. Typical of new bikes, they put the cheapest tubes and tires on it that they can get away with, but I replaced it immediately and as soon as the rains stops today we'll try again.
Just ordered my ibert for James; we'll have to do a ride.
